CBC Studio One - Concert Recording May 29, 2005 The VICO performed at CBC's Studio One, in front of a live audience. The concert was recorded, as part of Asian Heritage month, and was broadcast on Westcoast Performance on May 28, 2006, and nationally on Espace Musique. Selections on the program were Circling by Jin Zhang, Dance of Sunrise by Grace Lee, and The King is Dancing by Moshe Denburg. Persian influenced Intercultural Music with Farshid Samandari April 5, 2006 Music of the Whole World Series 1: Presentation #4 Farshid Samandari, an Iranian born composer who has studied western classical music as well as the classical music of the Persian (Iranian) tradition, will present a program highlighting his intercultural work. He will be assisted by Iranian musicians from the VICO roster in music listening, discussion, and live performance. Take home resource sheets will be made available and examples both of classical Persian music and of intercultural compositions will be demonstrated. The musical marriages of the Far East with Randy Raine-Reusch and Mei Han February 8, 2006 Music of the Whole World Series 1: Presentation #3 Randy Raine-Reusch and Mei Han (Composer/Performers) will present a program highlighting the musics of the far east (Korea, Japan, Thailand, China, and Malaysia) and the intercultural connections between them. In addition to music listening and discussion, they will perform on a variety of instruments including the zheng (Chinese Zither), the Khaen (mouth-organ of Laos & Northeast Thailand), and the Ichigenkin (Japanese one string zither). The Musical Bridges between China and the West with Mark Armanini December 7, 2005 Music of the Whole World Series 1: Presentation #2 Mark Armanini, a Vancouver born composer, will lead a lecture-demonstration on the specific intercultural compositions arising from the interactions of the musical systems of China and the West. In addition to music listening and discussion, he will be assisted by VICO musicians Qiu Xia He (Pipa) and Lan Tung (Erhu) who will illustrate traditional Chinese works as well as excerpts from Armanini's intercultural compositions. Indian-Western Fusions with Moshe Denburg October 26, 2005 Music of the Whole World Series 1: Presentation #1 Moshe Denburg (Composer) will present a program highlighting the music of India and the intercultural compositions that have stemmed from his studies of Indian and Western music over many years. He will be assisted by several VICO roster members in music listening, discussion, and live performance. Take home resource sheets will be made available. Examples both of classical Indian music and of intercultural compositions will be demonstrated. |
