Gamelan Music and the West December 5, 2006 Music of the Whole World Series 2: Presentation #2 Composer Michael O'Neill, together with several leading lights in the Vancouver Gamelan community - Sutrisno Hartana, Michael Tenzer, I. Wayan Sudirana, and Kenneth Newby - will present a program illustrating the art of Indonesian Gamelan and the intercultural music that has been created by bringing it into touch with western instruments and forms. The presentation will include live musical demonstrations on the instruments of the Gamelan. Take home study guides will be made available free of charge. Planetary Spirits - Music of the Whole S p o o k y World October 31, 2006 Music of the Whole World Series 2: Presentation #1 In honour of Halloween, various composers and musicians of the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra will explore how different world music traditions deal with spirits, good and bad. Representative cultures include: Jewish, Mexican, Chinese, Balinese, Celtic, and of course mainstream Western. The presentation includes live music performance and complimentary study guides. Inter-Culturealistic September 30, 2006 In the intimacy of the Chan Centre's Telus Studio Theatre, Inter-Culturealistic, a concert of original Canadian intercultural works was presented by The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra (VICO). Laudate Singers, the VICO's resident choir, was featured on several works. The concert served as the culmination of the VICO's 6 part educational series on intercultural music making, Music of the Whole World, and featured the world music elements and intercultural marriages covered in the series: Persian, Asian, Chinese, Scottish Bagpipes with Japanese Taiko, and more. Featured composers included John Oliver, Michael O’Neill, Farshid Samandari, and Moshe Denburg. More Details Scottish Highland Pipes and Japanese Taiko Drums with Michael O'Neill August 9, 2006 Music of the Whole World Series 1: Presentation #6 Michael O'Neill, a western born composer who has dedicated much of his career to composing for intercultural combinations of instruments, will utilize his work, 'Luffness', as a springboard to discuss and illustrate two very distinct traditions. A wild idea which shows how surprisingly natural certain intercultural marriages can be, 'Luffness' is scored for 3 taiko, 3 Scottish highland bagpipes, and shakuhachi. For the purposes of demonstration Michael will play Scottish highland bagpipes and will be joined by two of his composer/collaborators, Bonnie Soon and Boyd Seiichi Grealy, on taiko. Intercultural Orchestra spiced with Tango & Andean Music with Joseph Pepe Danza June 7, 2006 Music of the Whole World Series 1: Presentation #5 Joseph Pepe Danza, a composer/performer who has studied the music of numerous cultures over many years, will discuss and illustrate the musical sources for his intercultural composition, 'I Saw a Mountain', written for the VICO 3 years ago. In addition to music listening and discussion, Pepe will illustrate the Quena (South American flute) and Andean Percussion instruments, and will be joined by musical friends on a variety of instruments.
