On May 29, Imagined Worlds: Japanese Interventions will feature world-renowned Tokyo-based musicians Curtis Patterson (koto) and Bruce Huebner (shakuhachi), who will join the 26-member VICO to perform the world premiere of two Canada Council commissions by Vancouver composers Jin Zhang and Farshid Samandari, as well as a new arrangement by Mark Armanini of the traditional Japanese piece Chidori No Kyoku (Song of the Plovers) � all written especially for the unprecedented instrumental combination of koto and shakuhachi with the tar, dizi, xiao, zheng, sanxian, oud, pipa , erhu, santur, oud, bansuri, tabla, marimba, flute, oboe, clarinet, violin, viola, cello and bass of the VICO. The evening will also include a guest appearance by the Little Giant Chinese Chamber Orchestra of Taiwan.

On May 30, the Little Giant Chinese Chamber Orchestra will perform a concert of their own, with harpist Heidi Krutzen and guest appearances by members of the VICO. This will be the celebrated ensemble�s second concert appearance in Canada, and its first ever in British Columbia. Established in 2000 and now a strong musical force in Taiwan, the LgCO represents a new generation of Chinese orchestral music developed over the last half century. The orchestra is headquartered at the prestigious National Concert Hall in Taiwan, presenting both the complete ensemble of over one hundred musicians and smaller chamber ensembles throughout the year. In Vancouver, the LgCO will present a chamber ensemble of 16 instrumentalists, conducted by artistic director Chih-Sheng Chen, performing a programme featuring the latest works by Taiwanese composers as well as two pieces by Vancouver composers Mark Armanini and Lan Tung. www.littlegiant.idv.tw/index.htm

The VICO is thrilled to have the opportunity to collaborate with these talented artists, and to mark Asian Heritage Month in Vancouver by bringing international guests together with some of our city's finest world music practitioners, to create new contemporary music that reflects the cultural diversity of the society and the world in which we live.

The VICO was one of the first concert orchestras in the world devoted specifically to performing new inter-cultural music on a grand scale. It is currently the only such professional orchestra in Canada. For this third presentation in the VICO's 2009-2010 educational series, VICO Co-Artistic Director and composer Mark Armanini will bring audiences stories and musical discoveries from his recent trip to Wuhan, China to study the famous Zeng Hou Yi Tomb Bells. This magnificent 65-piece bronze bell set dates from 433 BC, the era of Confucius. Imagine the creative potential that lies in these ancient instruments, for which no musical scores survive�

Mark will be joined by special guests Geling Jiang (zheng, sanxian, ruan) and Song Yun (erhu) for this presentation.

Chai Found Music Workshop of Taiwan

Dear Musical Fiends,

One of the world�s best Chinese chamber music ensembles is putting on a free workshop in Vancouver and you are invited. The musicians of the Chai Found Music Workshop of Taiwan will demonstrate the seven most representative instruments of the Sizhu tradition: Erhu (two-stringed Chinese violin), Di (Chinese bamboo flutes), Pipa (Chinese lute), Guzheng (Chinese zither), Yangqin (Chinese dulcimer), Ruanxian (Chinese banjo or guitar) and Sheng (Chinese mouth organ, a reed pipe wind instrument).

Each musician will talk about the instrument's history and features and then demo not only traditional but also modern playing techniques requested by composers of contemporary music. After showcasing two short ensemble pieces, the group will answer questions and, if time allows, the audience can try these beautiful instruments themselves.

Student Composers & VICO Musicians Premiere New Intercultural Pieces

Vancouver, BC � The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra (VICO) is pleased to announce the successful culmination of �VICO in the Schools: Year 1� � a new educational initiative targeted at high school students. On Tuesday June 16, student composers from North Vancouver�s Seycove Secondary School will hear their own new pieces performed by VICO musicians Neelamjit Dhillon (tabla and bansuri), Geling Jiang (zheng and sanxian) and Jun Rong (erhu and gaohu) at a concert entitled New Music for Our New World held at Mount Seymour United Church. The multi-school event, organized by Seycove Secondary band director Rob McLeod and Vancouver�s Turning Point Ensemble, will also feature student composers from John Henderson Annex School (Vancouver) and Sherwood Park Elementary (North Vancouver), whose works will be performed by members of Turning Point Ensemble.

About VICO in the Schools:
In January and February 2009, the VICO (with support from Vancouver Pro Musica) conducted workshops with student composers in grades 11 and 12 at Seycove Secondary School. Musicians Dhillon, Jiang and Rong introduced the students to a selection of non-Western instruments, and composers Mark Armanini and Moshe Denburg presented an overview of basic techniques and challenges associated with composing intercultural music. With assistance from Seycove music teacher Rob McLeod, Armanini and Denburg guided the students in composing their own short pieces for the instruments presented. The new works for zheng, erhu, tabla, gaohu and sanxian were given their first public performance as part of the VICO�s Music of the Whole World educational series at the Vancouver Public Library on February 17th and were very well received. Since then, the students have had the opportunity to hear feedback from the VICO�s professional musicians and composers, and revise their works as needed. Dhillon, Jiang and Rong will perform the finished pieces at New Music for Our New World next week.

�The students (aided by their teacher Rob McLeod) have taken a giant leap into a brand new world, said workshop leader Mark Armanini. �Their works show vivid imagination, excellent grasp of compositional thought, and remarkable patience with what can be a complicated and emotional process.� Congratulations to Daniel Asch, Christopher Barnes, Jessica Heaven, Nicky Peterson, Mark Slater, Andrew Thomson and the rest of the student composers featured in New Music for Our New World, for taking the first steps on what we at the VICO hope will be a long and fruitful path of intercultural music-making!

The VICO is pleased to invite interested composers and music lovers to audit two upcoming workshop sessions, in which the 18-piece intercultural orchestra will be exploring some of the artistic challenges associated with creating and performing music for instruments from all over the world (e.g. combining improvisational and scored music, addressing tuning and notation issues, orchestration techniques and strategies for achieving balance and harmonic blend, and so on). The rehearsal/workshop will be facilitated by Jin Zhang, Mark Armanini and Neelamjit Dhillon. The instruments involved will include: dizi, xiao, erhu, santur, ud, zheng, sanxian, pipa, bansuri, tabla, sitar, tar, flute, clarinet, oboe, violin, viola, cello, double bass, marimba and hand percussion.

Hi everyone,

Just a quick reminder of our concert tomorrow night in the Telus Studio Theatre at the Chan Centre. It's a rare opportunity to see the full orchestra on stage, not to mention our two special international guests (Dutch composer/artistic director Joel Bons and Taiwanese multi-instrumentalist Janelle Yi Chen Chang). Also, for the first time ever, we'll be projecting live video of the performance on a large screen, so you can see the musicians and their instruments up close as they play.

Tickets are still available at the bargain price of $20 ($10 for seniors, students and groups of 10 or more)...you can buy online via Ticketmaster, or at the door. There will be free event parking in the Rose Garden Parkade right next to the venue. We hope you'll join us!

Please join the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra (VICO) in greeting Joel Bons, composer and artistic director of the Atlas Ensemble, a sister intercultural ensemble based in Amsterdam. Mr. Bons is resident with the VICO for the week of our upcoming concert on March 14, in which one of his pieces will be featured. We are honoured to have him with us, and pleased with the opportunity to create international connections with other intercultural ensembles. Mr. Bons has a wealth of experience and knowledge to share with us, and we hope many of our colleagues will avail themselves of this opportunity.

Joel Bons - Biography
Joel Bons was born in Amsterdam. He studied guitar and composition at the Sweelinck Conservatory and visited the summer courses of Franco Donatoni in Siena and the Darmstadter Ferienkurse fur Neue Musik. In Freiburg he continued his studies with Brian Ferneyhough. Bons composed chamber and ensemble works such as Attacca, Variations, Sextet, Tour, Bref, Draught, First Edition, Feeststuk, Flard and Tour a Tour. His music has been performed by the Asko Ensemble, Atlas Ensemble, Netherlands Wind Ensemble, Nieuw Ensemble, Radio Chamber Orchestra and Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 1980 Joel Bons co-founded the Nieuw Ensemble. He has been responsible for virtually all programming of this group. Besides he organised festivals such as Complexity? (1990), Rules and Games (1995), Improvisations (1996), the multi cultural Festival of Plucked Instruments (1998), and The Refined Ear (on microtonality, 2002). Bons has worked as free-lance artistic adviser for organisations such as the Holland Festival, Gaudeamus, ISCM (Dutch section), Donemus, Rotterdam Arts Council and the Concertgebouw. Bons supervised all cd recordings of the Nieuw Ensemble and produced a solo cd by violinist Irvine Arditti. Together with film director Frank Scheffer he made a television documentary on Boulez' Eclat.

In 1988 Bons visited World Music Days in Hong Kong. He then traveled through China where he became aquainted with a new generation of Chinese composers. In 1991 the Nieuw Ensemble presented these remarkable talents to western audiences, which marked the international breakthrough of new Chinese music.

In 1998 Joel Bons and the Nieuw Ensemble were awarded the Prince Bernhard Fund Music Prize for their 'markedly lively and adventurous programming which can be described as groundbreaking, both in the literal and figurative senses of the word'.

In 2002 Bons did artistic research in the Near East and Central Asia and founded the Atlas Ensemble, a unique chamber orchestra uniting musicians from China, Central Asia, the Near East and Europe. For his work with the Atlas Ensemble he was granted the prestigious Amsterdam Prize for the Arts 2005. Since 2005 he is lecturer/guest professor of composition at the Amsterdam Conservatory. At the request of the Festival d'Automne a Paris Joel Bons is curator of the music programme of 'Scene artistique du Moyen-Orient', for which he visited the Middle East in the spring of 2007.

The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra presents sounds of China, the Middle East, India and the West, in works by Vancouver composers Mark Armanini, Moshe Denburg, Lan Tung, Jin Zhang and special guest composer Joel Bons (artistic director of Amsterdam's Atlas Ensemble): music that transcends cultural boundaries, performed on instruments from all over the world. For the first time ever at a VICO concert, the performance will include large-screen video, giving audiences an up-close view of the musicians and their instruments in action.

The VICO is currently the only professional orchestral ensemble in BC (possibly in Canada) devoted to performing inter-cultural music on a grand scale. Planetful of Sound offers VICO musicians and composers an exciting opportunity to connect with Joel Bons, who has been breaking similar ground in Europe with his acclaimed contemporary music group Nieuw Ensemble and the Atlas Ensemble. The latter is described (very similarly to the VICO) as �a unique chamber orchestra uniting brilliant musicians from China, Central Asia, the Near East and Europe, presenting an unheard soundworld of western and non-western instruments.� Like the VICO, the Atlas Ensemble's repertoire consists almost entirely of specially commissioned works, by such composers as Guo Wenjing, Jia Daqun, Faradj Karajev, Fabio Nieder, Theo Loevendie , Frangiz Ali-Zade, Bun-Ching Lam, Jack Body, Stefano Bellon, Artjom Kim, Javanshir Guliev and Evrim Demirel. Planetful of Sound will feature the North American premiere of Joel Bons� piece Tour � Tour as well as Floating on the Sea of Serenity (Armanini), Little Suite for Erhu and Harp (Zhang), Market Place, Chapter 1: China (Tung) and Camel Hop at the Caravanserai (Denburg), performed by a 22-member ensemble that includes zheng, sanxian, santur, oud, dizi, bansuri, sheng, suona, flute, oboe, clarinet, marimba, Celtic harp, percussion and Western strings. The programme will also feature a solo by visiting Taiwanese musician Janelle Yichen on satar (Uighur fiddle from northwestern China).

In the VICO, Western-trained orchestral musicians rub shoulders with performers in musical traditions from all over the world�shedding light on the musical traditions of Canada�s many cultures and the myriad bridges between them. www.vi-co.org

AN EXCITING CHINESE NEW YEAR FOR VICO COMPOSERS
The music of VICO composers Jin Zhang, Mark Armanini and Moshe Denburg will be heard across Canada on CBC Radio Two this coming Sunday and Monday (Feb. 1 and 2), when a recent concert by Silk Road Music and the Victoria Symphony Orchestra is featured on The Signal and Canada Live. Tune in to hear the world premiere of Jin Zhang's Country Market (a Canada Council commission), Moshe Denburg's orchestral arrangement of Qiu Xia He's Fire Fire Fire and Mark Armanini's arrangement of a Chinese traditional work entitled Han Yan Xi Shui. The concert promises to be a beautiful fusion of classical Chinese music with the modern symphony orchestra.

The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra (VICO) is getting into the full swing of things for our 2008/09 season. Your name was suggested to us as someone who is interested in the kinds of programming and cultural experiences that we offer, and thus we would like to invite you to get to know us better. We are pleased to offer you 2 complimentary tickets to our first �gala� concert of the season: Imagined Worlds: Past & Futures Unveiled on November 23, 2008.

We would also like to invite you to a pre-concert reception, where you and other special guests will be given a brief overview of what we accomplished last year and what is in store for the future. On display will be photographs by VICO photographer Alistair Eagle and a DVD of some of our past performances as well as an exhibition of photographs by Laurie Gish called A Living Heritage: The Composer�s Community. We�d love you to join us for some hors-d�oeuvres, to meet the artists in person, and to find out first-hand what the VICO is all about.

The concert itself will feature the world premiere of a pioneering inter-cultural work by renowned composer/ethnomusicologist Elliot Weisgarber (1919-2001). Songs of a Thousand Autumns, a choral piece based on classical texts from the 8th century Manyoshu Anthology of the Imperial Court of Japan, was commissioned in 1984 but has never yet been performed in its entirety. The VICO will present it in a new arrangement by Mark Armanini, as the centrepiece of an exciting programme that also includes The Inner Light (by another pioneer of inter-cultural music, George Harrison of Beatles fame), the world premiere of Habitaculum � Dwelling Place, a new commission for choir and inter-cultural orchestra by Vancouver composer Larry Nickel, and Nasime Shiraaz (from Dreams of the Wanderer) by Moshe Denburg, featuring astounding Iranian tenor Amir Haghighi. Joining us in concert is our longtime collaborator, Laudate Singers, a great choir from the North Shore under the direction of Lars Kaario.

A little bit about us: The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra�s mission is to act as a forum for the creation of a new musical art form in which all of Canada�s resident cultures can take part. Through composition, performance and educational outreach, the VICO serves as a voice for Canadian composers and musicians of diverse backgrounds, and fosters the creation of musical works that fuse and transcend cultural traditions. The VICO is the only concert orchestra in BC (possibly in Canada) with a specifically cross-cultural mandate and roster, bringing musicians trained in the Western (European) classical tradition together with performers in the musical traditions of cultures from all over the world (Asian, African, East Indian and Middle Eastern, among others). VICO�s composers and musicians are on the cutting edge, writing and performing the Canadian music of the future. In our 2008/09 season we are excited to be adding several major new pieces by Canadian composers to our repertoire.

Welcome to the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra�s 2008/09 season! We want to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued interest and support of the VICO. This year we are excited about adding several major new pieces by Canadian composers to our repertoire � music in which a range of cultural communities will be represented, including Balinese, Middle Eastern, Vietnamese, Indian, and Chinese.

Join VICO composer/performer Joseph "Pepe" Danza and colleagues Moshe Denburg, Mei Han, Coat Cooke, Navid Goldrick, Neel Dhillon, Koca Dioubate, Clyde Reed and Amy Stephen for a dynamic 90-minute presentation highlighting diverse musical styles and traditions - including Japanese, Middle Eastern, Indian, Celtic, Jewish, African, Latin and Chinese - and the possibilities and challenges associated with incorporating these traditions into inter-cultural compositions. Musical demonstrations will be provided on accordion, flute, saxophone, shakuhachi, santur, tabla, guitar, zheng, drums, double bass and vocals.

Capilano College School of Music, in collaboration with the VICO, will present a concert featuring the world premiere of Dreams of the Wanderer by BC composer Moshe Denburg, and performed by the VICO with the combined choirs of the Capilano College Music Program - Capilano College Singers, Capilano College Festival Chorus , and Cecilia Ensemble Women's Choir. The composition will showcase the musical traditions from a variety of cultures, and will be multilingual, incorporating Farsi, Mandarin Chinese, Hebrew and English. Iranian tenor Amir Haghighi will be the featured soloist, and Lars Kaario will conduct. The concert program will include a cappella songs from a variety of cultures, performed by the choirs, as well as several instrumental works for smaller forces performed by members of the VICO.

The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra is proud to announce its participation in Cultural Olympiad 2008, with a one-of-a-kind educational/performance event produced in collaboration with the Vancouver Public Library and Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad. �Setting The World To Music� offers a fascinating sneak peek at the composer�s craft and, in particular, at the challenges of writing and performing music that combines instruments from different cultures. Four well-known Vancouver composers - Mark Armanini, Moshe Denburg, Farshid Samandari and Jin Zhang � will address varying approaches to inter-cultural music, through live demonstrations by an inter-cultural orchestra of 15 musicians (including violins, violas, woodwinds, zheng, erhu, pipa, bansuri, sitar and tabla).

�Setting The World To Music� is the third presentation in a six-part educational series titled Music of the Whole World, produced annually by the VICO in collaboration with the Vancouver Public Library. The presentations in the series typically involve one composer and 4-5 musicians; partnering with Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad has allowed the VICO to expand the Feb. 12 presentation into a colourful and dynamic world music event.

ABOUT THE VICO:

The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra is presently the only concert orchestra in British Columbia (possibly in Canada) with a specifically cross-cultural mandate and roster, and the only large orchestral ensemble dedicated to performing new inter-cultural works on a grand scale. Its core roster boasts 24 musicians, with a similar number of occasional members. Some are trained in the Western (European) classical tradition, while others are performers in the musical traditions of cultures from all over the world (such as Asian, African, East Indian and Middle Eastern). Through concerts, educational programs, composer residencies, collaborations with a wide variety of artistic organizations and educational institutions, and other means (e.g. the web - see www.vi-co.org), the VICO is committed to encouraging dialogue and artistic innovation; to making new and existing inter-cultural music accessible to broad audiences locally, nationally, and internationally. We strive to be a fresh and relevant voice in the contemporary music of our country...a creative force for innovation, diversity and understanding.

ABOUT THE COMPOSERS:

Mark Armanini is an award-winning composer of over 40 works for choir, voice, chamber and orchestral ensembles. He has been composing for various combinations of Western and Asian instruments since 1990. In 2001 yangqin virtuoso Vivian Xia, performing Mark�s 'Concerto for Yangqin', was a finalist in the Edmonton Symphony's Canadian Concerto Competition. Mark is a founder of Vancouver Pro Musica and is on the music faculty of Capilano College.

Moshe Denburg has studied music extensively, both formally and informally in Canada, Israel, India and Japan. His compositions reflect his Jewish roots as well as an ongoing commitment to the principle of inter-cultural music making. He has written a good number of chamber works utilizing instruments from non-Western cultures (East Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic and more).

Farshid Samandari was born in Iran in 1971, into a prominent Bah�'� family. This meant that he was neither allowed to pursue academic studies in any university nor to leave the country. Still, he pursued his studies privately and by correspondence. Now a Canadian citizen, Farshid�s music reflects his interest in contemporary classical vocabulary, spectral analysis and extended techniques, as well as the integration of different ethnic musics and vocabularies in his compositions.

Jin Zhang received his musical education at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and at Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo. In Canada he has conducted and composed for symphony orchestras, Chinese folk orchestras, small ensembles and choirs. He is presently Music Director and Conductor for the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra and the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra. He also conducts for the West Coast Symphony Orchestra and the BC Chinese Music Association Ensemble.

On Saturday night, November 10, 2007, a concert highlighting the inter-cultural works of Canadian composer Trichy Sankaran will be take place at Vancouver Community College Auditorium. The composer himself will be the featured performer, as many of the works include the mrdangam and the kanjira, the South Indian instruments upon which Professor Sankaran is a virtuoso.

The roster is comprised of a veritable who's-who of west coast world music percussionists, including: Sal Ferreras, Pepe Danza, Boris Sichon, Niel Golden, and Jonathan Bernard.

The concert ensemble consists of longstanding members of the VICO, both classical and jazz players, as follows: Piano - Paul Plimley; Clarinet � AK Coope; Flute - Mark MacGregor; Violin - Susan Cosco; Viola - Henry Lee; Cello - Finn Manniche; Double Bass � Paul Blaney.

Apart from the works of Prof Sankaran, the concert will include a work for tabla and inter-cultural ensemble by VICO composer Niel Golden.

Trichy Sankaran is a musical treasure in Canada, and no less internationally. This is a golden opportunity to hear a true master of rhythm in concert.

Welcome to the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra�s 2007-08 season! We want to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued interest and support of the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra. 2007 has been our busiest year to date and our yearly program now includes 6 free educational presentations at the Vancouver Public Library and 3 large-scale concerts of original inter-cultural music.

This November, the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra will present a one-of-a-kind event entitled �Imagined Worlds: the Music of Trichy Sankaran�. Professor Sankaran, a South Indian classical drum virtuoso who has taught at York University for over 35 years, will lead a 4-day composer-in-residence program culminating in a concert showcasing his compositions at the Vancouver Community College (VCC) Theatre on November 10, 2007. The residency will include several workshops and solo recitals, both at UBC and at the VCC and present Prof. Sankaran�s pieces as well as his perspectives on inter-cultural music-making.

Behind the scenes, we are also adapting to our growing financial needs. In order to accommodate the VICO�s increased programming, we�re launching our inaugural Fundraising Drive.

There are several ways you can show your support for the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra:

- Make a donation through the Canada Helps link on our website. You will receive a tax receipt via email within minutes.

- Mail a cheque for your donation to our office or drop it off at our next event.

- Volunteer your time at a VICO event.

Anyone who donates before November 1^st will receive our special offer of 2 FREE tickets to the Trichy Sankaran performance (minimum donation $25).

Jin Zhang, a composer and conductor originally from Beijing, will demonstrate, with the help of VICO roster musicians his inter-cultural work, work which has as its basis his lifelong dedication to the classical traditions both of China and the West. Take home study guides will be made available free of charge.
